Laser Induced LIBS / LIPS and Laser Ablation atomic Spectrometry is a process by which a laser beam is used as the energy on sample surface to get into the material for analysis. This process of Laser ablation into materials are being considered with the usage for many technical applications, including: as a manufacturing process for solar cell (c-Si) edge isolation, routine welding and bonding of metal parts, the deposition of thin metallic and dielectric films, the production of nano materials, fabrication of superconducting materials, and micromachining of MEMS structures.
The optical surface analysis methods analyzing single point and multiple points capture the element composition on the surface of a component within milliseconds per measuring point. The systems are best suited both for bulk analysis (measuring the composition) and Depth Profiling analysis (surface, layers, thickness of coatings) and combined on determining the units and measures of all the material characterizations. The underlying technology is Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), where a short pulse laser ejects a tiny amount, typically a few 3μm of the sample specimen from the surface and into a plasma. This plasma forms with a material-specific electromagnetic light spectrum. The spectral distribution of the light is recorded immediately in real time. From this data, the elemental distribution at the measuring point is determined.
One analysis? – to obtain the elemental and isotopic analysis, no or minimal sample introductory preparation, rapid speed and high throughput? Look no further than the Hyphenated LAS-LIPS Instrument LA-LIBS instrument, from Agile Analytical Group. By capturing the emitted light from a laser ablation plasma, Hyphenated LAS-LIPS system performs rapid spectroscopic analysis while transporting ablated particles to an ICP-OES or an ICP-MS instrument with high transport efficiency.
This innovative analytical system enables exciting new measurement possibilities: analysis of organic and lighter elements, rapid elemental mapping, normalization of ICP-MS signal with plasma emission, and simultaneous measurement of major/trace elements and isotopes.
Laser ablation in Spectroscopy (LAS) is a proven, active technique platform for performing chemical analysis. LAS contributes to the plasma spectrometry from the sample’s surface inwards. This plasma can be analyzed to determine the presence and concentration levels of elements in the period table — a technology known as LIBS or LIPS Laser Induced Plasma Spectrometry and the LAS also creates a flux of fine particulates that can be readily transported to a hyphenated secondary source for ICP-OES analysis (LAS-ICP-OES) or ICP-MS analysis (LAS-ICP-MS).
